Volume 3 Update

Illustration by Milton Caniff and Johann Mitchell

Due to a scheduling problem with our manufacturer we are having to push back our previously announced ship date to the week of December 5th, exactly 3 short weeks later than we previously announced. Note that this is nothing major just a hiccup and everyone that have pre-ordered will still have theirs well before Christmas!

On the bright side this will give those of you that haven't pre-ordered a little more time to do so (and cash in on the free 3 VOLUME FULL SERIES CUSTOM SLIPCASE!) that will go out to everyone that pre-orders and will be included in the same package as V3. Once we begin shipping V3, those that want the slipcase will have to pay a nominal fee (to be determined).

Again, my most sincere apologies for this last minute delay, I hope that another 3 weeks won't be a problem for you considering these remaining shows have been lost for over 50 years! I've been working on this project for nearly 6 years and I am so excited to be able to finally complete it and share it with all of you...thanks for your generosity and support and for hanging on with me on this sometimes bumpy ride ;-)

P.S. More Volume 3 art and details coming next post!

A Hero By George!

I'm going to skip the Dean Hess post just one more time here to tell about something fabulous that just happened. First of all, this man is a hero:

Actor, hero and friend George Stover

Now George may not look like Steve Canyon (i.e. "the hero type") but he really is and I'm going to tell you why: You wouldn't be reading this blog nor seeing any of these Steve Canyon episodes if it weren't for George. Back in the 1990's my pal George kindly introduced me to the Steve Canyon TV series (by way of the pilot film OPERATION TOWLINE).

For some reason the show just rolled around in the back of my subconscious until 2005. That's when I became intrigued (obsessed perhaps) with the lack of information available on the series and thus began my winding flight-path to where we are now with the recovery, restoration and release of the series on DVD.

ANYWAY, George recently found and sent to me his copy of the pilot film, which is the ONLY existing decent quality copy we know of that has (among other things) this:

Here's an actual frame from Milton Caniff's introduction to the Steve Canyon Pilot Film.

It's a minute and a half intro by the man himself, Milton Caniff, that was filmed in the summer of 1958 and attached to a few 16mm prints of the pilot that were screened at Air Force Bases around the world. It is very rare, and it replaces the low quality copy we have used to screen at Comic-Con, Reel Fest and other places! Even Milton Caniff's personal copy of the unaired version in our archive doesn't have these materials! But now we have it for inclusion in Volume 3, and it's all thanks to George!

Another frame from the "Stover" Steve Canyon pilot film

AND like I said, none of this would have likely happened and we probably wouldn't be enjoying ol' Col. Steve if George hadn't been so kind to me way back when. So let's raise a big mug of Ovaltine to George who has impacted all of us so generously today and yesterday. Thanks George! Note that George has appeared in MANY movies, including two of mine (INVADER and TWILIGHT OF THE DOGS) and several of John Waters' films. Click here to visit George's Internet Movie Database page for his full list of credits, and here to find his Facebook page.

###

For a clip this time, here's one of the more popular Chesterfield Commercials from 1958:

Titled TEST PILOT, this commercial was produced by the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company (L&M) specifically for airing during the Steve Canyon series. Great planes in this one! This commercial can be found during the first commercial break of OPERATION JETTISON on THE COMPLETE STEVE CANYON ON TV Volume 1.

###

Ok, to wrap things up...so we REALLY REALLY PROMISE...next time on the runup pad is Col. Dean Hess, who besides being a Korean War hero, and the subject of the 1957 feature film BATTLE HYMN (see below), was the USAF Official Liaison to the Steve Canyon TV series!

Poster for the 1957 Universal International motion picture about Col. Dean Hess. (Universal International studios is also the place where Steve Canyon was made)

Whither Steve Canyon Volume 3?

It was this week last year that we released THE COMPLETE STEVE CANYON ON TV Volume 1 ...and although we would prefer waiting till closer to the actual release date, the demands of YOU, our friends and followers of this adventure have suggested we start taking orders NOW...an act of faith I suppose...

Here's Steve Canyon's "poppa" Milton Caniff holding one of his artist reference models (an F-100 Super Sabre) for an NBC publicity shot for the Steve Canyon TV series back in 1958! (Photo taken by Bob Goldwater (NBC) August 11, 1958 in the Caniff home in High Tor New York).

###

We're shooting now for a February or March release (and earlier if possible)...that it's reasonably achievable (with all of the work left to do on this last volume)...we've been battling with a lack of funds to continue at a steady pace. We also just had a hard drive fail (with materials that were already completed for Volume 3 on it)...meaning that they either need to be recovered or redone, either way it's a costly prospect. (Anybody out there that can help recover files from a hard drive with mechanical failure..NOT software failure...we'd love to hear from you!).

The Boeing B-47 Stratojet bomber (with JATO jet assisted take-off) from the Steve Canyon episode OPERATION INTERCEPT, arguably the most memorable and much anticipated show of the series (which will be included in Volume 3).

I meant for this to be a brief post...so I'll just say let us know your thoughts on this plan (email link below) or as a direct comment on this post...OR via our Facebook page...and we'll post our decision in the next day or two.

Email us at Ye Olde Caniff/Canyon Shoppe and let us know what you think. Thanks again for remembering Milton and for making this project possible.

Harry and I want to thank everyone for the words of encouragement and support and all of the lovely emails and communications we've been getting lately. We are hard at work trying to make The Complete Steve Canyon On TV Volume 3 DVDs just as nice and special as the first two volumes.

Here's a little something from our archives:

Yet Another Volume 2 Update...

Just a BRIEF message to everyone out there that have pre-ordered or are waiting to order Volume 2...

All of the artwork has been finished (thank you
Johann!), is at the factory and we have seen and approved their printing "proofs" for manufacture (as of yesterday).

With a little luck the master discs will be completely finished and handed over to the factory early this coming week for quality-control approval, replication and packaging.

In plain english this means Volume 2 should be ready to ship sometime before the end of this month! It IS coming and again we apologise for it taking so long. As soon as we have a date for delivery from the factory we will let you know right here!

NOTE: Updated release/ship date is May 15, 2009! Discs are "at the factory" and being manufactured right now (May 6th, 2009). Thanks to everyone for your patience.

Harry and I want to thank everyone for the words of encouragement and support and all of the lovely emails and communications during this time...and for your patience. We are trying to make these Steve Canyon DVDs just as nice and special as we can and sometimes it's just hard to predict problems and just how long things will take.

Most of the work and deciding and waiting is now over...here's our fearless leader Milton Caniff looking at publicity materials for the Steve Canyon TV series waay back in 1958! (Photo taken by Bob Goldwater (NBC) August 11, 1958 in the Caniff home in High Tor New York).

Operation Intercept Screening

On Thursday, March 12, 2009 The National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) will be starting their annual 4 day aviation film festival ReelStuff Film Festival in Dayton Ohio, which will be featuring a whole bunch of classic films being presented by an impressive array of personalities...from their ReelStuff Press Release

"...Among Reel Stuff’s presenters are Cliff Robertson and Clay Lacy/The Pilot, Catherine Wyler/Memphis Belle, Nikolai Mullerschoen/The Red Baron, and Steve Hinton/Always. Robertson, who both starred and directed The Pilot, is an Academy Award-winning actor, pilot and 2006 enshrinee of the National Aviation Hall of Fame. Aerial cinematographer Clay Lacy and aerial coordinator Steve Hinton, both also pilots, are each nominees for enshrinement into the Hall of Fame.

Additional Reel Stuff Film Festival presenters and projects include Jeffrey Roth/The Wonder of it All, Paul Glenshaw/Barnstorming, John Ellis/Steve Canyon, Richard Hoerle/Captain Eddie, James Farmer/Twelve O’clock High and Strategic Air Command, Cliff & Cathy Fleming/We Were Soldiers, and Rocco DeVilliers/The Fly Boys.

Among our original film screenings in Dayton’s historic Victoria Theater is the Cold War classic, Strategic Air Command, starring Jimmy Stewart, who happens to also be a true-life aviation hero and one of our incoming Hall of Fame enshrinees this July,” explained Kaplan.

Catherine Wyler, daughter of Oscar-winning director, William Wyler, will screen both the 1944 documentary of her late father’s, the Memphis Belle, and the 1990 Warner Brothers action-drama of the same name, which she co-produced."

(NOTE that our very own James Farmer, who provides expert commentary on many episodes in our Steve Canyon DVD series, will be there presenting the WWII aviation epic Twelve O'clock High!)

"They look like snowmen!"...Scene from the Steve Canyon episode OPERATION INTERCEPT, arguably the most memorable show of the series (which will be included in Volume 3 DVD later this year) but will be shown at ReelStuff on March 12th.
You can get more info at "ReelStuff". including a movie clip from the episode.

Of special interest to Steve Canyon fans will be the rare public screening of OPERATION INTERCEPT at 7:30pm Thursday March 12th. The 28th episode filmed, this wildly popular episode will be screened (digitally projected) in the Engineers Club Theatre of Dayton (one of Milton Caniff's old haunts) and will be preceded by a reception (from 6:00pm to 7:30) and discussion/Q&A with me, John Ellis, Restoration Producer for Steve Canyon.

Admission to this presentation and screening (and all individual screenings) is $10.00, admission to the reception will be separate and is at this writing To Be Determined. Further information on tickets to all screenings and the special reception etc. is available at their website.

It is interesting to note that this episode premiered originally on NBC on Tuesday March 31, 1959, almost 50 years to the day of this rare public screening. Don't miss it!

More Steve Canyon on Ebay

(click on image to go to our auction)The Red's know!
Click here to go to Milton Caniff Estate eBay Auction

In an effort to further fund our efforts to restore the Steve Canyon TV series, we are offering this original artwork in an online auction on eBay. This is the original art to the Sunday STEVE CANYON strip, dated April 16, 1961. NOTE that this is the very first Steve Canyon SUnday page original we have ever offered online. This is MILTON CANIFF finished art (pencil and ink), over layouts by Dick Rockwell (Norman Rockwell's nephew) who drew layouts from 1953 on (and lettering by Frank Engli, which he did for Milton from 1934 until 1975). This is a superb sunday strip from early in the story Caniff titled THE RETURN OF THE CRAG HAG (Mar 31st to July 1st, 1961). The art is quite clean for a sunday page and in fact looks MUCH brighter, nicer, sharper AND "more even" in person than it does in this image (It's very hard to scan art of this size, this is merely a snapshot). Size is approximately 25 1/8" X 18 3/4". Dogie Hogan and princess Snowflower are in panels 1-3, Steve is in panels 4-9, MADAME LYNX is in panel 9 (her introduction within this story), and Milton Caniff's distinctive signature in panel one along with the distinctive Canyon logo (designed by Noel Sickles).

A RARE SUNDAY STRIP FROM THE MILTON CANIFF ESTATE.This original has been in Milton's family since it was drawn and it is now finally being offered for sale. This is it, don't be afraid to bid and miss your chance on this amazing offering...perhaps you'll be the lucky owner!

This is a one of a kind item, a very rare, very early and very nice Milton Caniff STEVE CANYON original ... NOTE - We are in process of winding down with the sale of Milton's originals...so don't miss this great opportunity...we won't be selling many more after this. We are close to the end of what we will be offering.

NOTE - The sale of this artwork directly helps the Milton Caniff Estate with projects we are involved in which we believe will interest many fans of his work, so support a good cause and get a guaranteed GREAT piece of early Steve Canyon art that has NEVER been in the hands of another collector!

I want to mention that I have a LOT of pictures, film clips and information to post in the coming weeks which I am sure will be of interest to those of you that frequent our site, so please be patient and drop by often. And a reminder to everyone that our Special Edition DVD and Commemorative Hats make great stocking stuffers, and purchasing them (or even donating a buck or two) helps to support restoring these shows. I will mention that we just finished transferring episodes 19 through 33 and they look and sound TERRIFIC! This is so exciting, and we can't wait to share these on DVD this coming year, the series 50th anniversary...

Oh, and there's BIG NEWS coming on Monday...so stay tuned!

Steve Canyon on Ebay

(click on image to go to our auction)Oley's Lament
Click here to go to Milton Caniff Estate eBay Auction

In an effort to further fund our efforts to restore the Steve Canyon TV series, we are offering this well known artwork in an online auction on eBay. This is the original art to the daily STEVE CANYON strip, dated March 14, 1952. This is PURE MILTON CANIFF, no assistants worked on this (except for Frank Engli lettering, which he did for Milton from 1934 until 1975). This is a superb daily strip from late in the story Caniff titled CRISIS ON THE CAMPUS (November 15, 1951-April 6th 1952).

The art is pretty clean, no glue stains or the like, and no "paste-overs". The final image from this artwork is perhaps the quintessential illustration that is associated with Milton Caniff. Size is approximately 22 7/8" X 7 1/4". Summer Olson and the Whissel Sisters are in panels one through three, Little Oley Olsen joins them in panels two and three, and then there is the famous powerfully iconic image of Oley crying on the steps with Milton Caniff's distinctive signature in panel four.

THE RAREST OF THE RARE. This last panel has been printed and reprinted the world over as a representation of Caniff's artistry as a storyteller and the greatest adventure comic strip artist of the 20th Century. This image has spoken to the world and it is now finally being offered for sale.

The Girls of Steve Canyon - Part 3

Dean Fredericks/Elena VerdugoPhoto #9220-53 - Col. Steve Canyon (Dean Fredericks) is greeted by Captain Maggie Gallagher (Elena Verdugo) on his return to Big Thunder from Okinawa in the STEVE CANYON episode, "OPERATION SOUVENIR."

Yep, it's Elena Verdugo this time, years before her unforgettable stint as Consuelo Lopez, Marcus Welby's altruistic assistant, and years after playing countless ethnic character parts such as the gypsy girl Ilonka in House of Frankenstein (1944). In this episode she plays a bit of a love interest to Steve, then things go bad with smugglers who put the kibosh on their little party.

And another interesting thing, for those who say Steve is the only strip character (other than General "Shanty" Towne in the pilot), we give you the following panel (from "Steve Canyon" - Dell Four Color comic #1033 Sept. 1959) for your consideration:

Capt. Maggie GallagherComic art by Ray Bailey, story by Paul S. Newman. This was the first Steve Canyon TV tie-in comic, and ironically the last Steve Canyon comic book published.

News: Alter Ego #72 Hits The Stands!

Dick Rockwell On Being The 36 Year Ghost Of The Great Milton Caniff - In His Last Interview

"The Drawing Board Is My Sanctuary"

(Click on image to go to their site.)
Alter Ego #72 Cover
Click to go to Two Morrows Online!

We were contacted by Alter Ego Editor Roy Thomas a few months ago, to provide some scans of Steve Canyon strips...but these weren't the work of Milton Caniff, they were pencilled and inked by Dick Rockwell following Milton's untimely death. Norman Rockwell's nephew Dick worked for Milton from 1952 through 1988, and though a true unsung hero, he passed away in 2006. Harry and I have thought that Rockwell never got the recognition he deserved, and we were delighted to hear that Roy was publishing an interview that Jim Amash conducted with Dick in 2004.

Roy Thomas SDCC2007Roy Thomas at The TwoMorrows booth at the 2007 San Diego Comic-Con

For those of you interested in the Caniff/Canyon world, this extensive 15 page interview is choc-a-block with reproductions of the work he did with Milton (including the very last Steve Canyon daily continuity strip)! For everyone else there are scans of his extensive comicbook work, including pages for Timely, DC, Marvel, Biro, Fawcett, Hillman, Quality and others...a lot of neat stuff. You can order the 100 page magazine from their site (for $9.00 plus postage), or you can pay $2.95 and download a PDF file of the issue. Either way, there's a lot of great stuff packed in there (and not just Dick).

ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Archive: Biography: Milton Caniff and Norman Rockwell in Coronet

We (The Milton Caniff Estate) recently loaned the ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Archive copies of two issues of Coronet magazine from 1942 and 1947 to digitize. Read these fascinating articles about Milton Caniff's challenges in creating and drawing these strips...plus scans of great artwork and more! Thanks to ASIFA-Hollywood and Steve Worth for sharing this content on their website.
