Steve Canyon Christmas Episode

Merry Christmas from The Milton Caniff Estate! Enjoy our gift, this clip from the Steve Canyon Christmas episode that hasn't been seen in the US since 1958!

Dean Fredericks gets in the spirit

Above, from left, Dean Fredericks and friend (Sean McClory). These images are all frame blowups from this episode.

This clip (which features Dean Fredericks, Celia Lovsky, Sean McClory and Barbara Beaird) is a 6 minute 13 second Quicktime mp4 movie clip from the 16th episode, THE GIFT, written by Ray Bradbury and Sidney Carroll and directed by Don Taylor, which aired originally on Saturday December 20th 1958 at 9pm on NBC. It was never repeated in the United States. When ABC aired summer reruns of Steve Canyon in 1960, for some reason this one (and 13 others) never got shown. What you are about to see is the first time in 48 years that any part of this episode has been seen in the United States. The shows were run in Australia twice in 1959 and 1960, on Armed Forces television overseas in 1963 and 1965, and dubbed in Japanese and broadcast by Nagoya TV in Japan in 1963, and possibly 8 episodes were shown in Germany and latin america circa 1959/1960. If you remember seeing STEVE CANYON broadcast at any other time or place since, we'd love to hear from you.

This episode (and all 34 shows of the series) will be included on the full series dvd coming out from The Milton Caniff Estate in the summer of 2008. Enjoy the holidays!

It's Official! Tempe Video Signed for Wide Steve Canyon DVD Retail Release!!

SC Box

This is the BIG NEWS that I have been hinting at for a while. Harry and I have signed an exclusive retail distribution agreement with our longtime friend J.R. Bookwalter at Tempe Video. This will put our initial Steve Canyon Special Edition DVD (which has seen limited availability here on our blog) out into wide release on March 18 of 2008. This means it will be available through Amazon.com, DeepDiscount.com, DVDUniverse.com, Buy.com, DVDPlanet.com, DVDEmpire.com and others, as well as being available to rent from Netflix.com.

We are considering this as a market sales test for our full series DVD which we plan to release sometime during the summer of 2008 for the 50th Anniversary of the Steve Canyon TV series. For more info visit Tempe Video, our friends at TV Shows On DVD (who broke the story) and Amazon.com for more info.

The Girls of Steve Canyon - Part 4

Sylvia Lewis
Sylvia LewisThe Hotcha Girl From French Morocco...

We recently had the distinct pleasure of talking with the lovely and talented Sylvia Lewis about her featured role as the beguiling club dancer "Macayo" in the Steve Canyon episode OPERATION B-52.

Dancing SylviaPutting on a show...

Sylvia and I share a theory that her character in this episode was named after the famous Macayo Club that used to be in Santa Monica and where Sylvia danced and performed often early in her career. She knew author Charles Beaumont to some extent, and remembers being called in for the part (most likely by casting director Gene Reynolds) WITHOUT any audition, so it is possible...

Sylvia and DeanMaking time with Col. Canyon!

We recommend a visit to Sylvia's website at sylvialewis.net for a whole lot of cool pix and clips and info showing highlites of our friend Sylvia's extraordinary career. She was a guest star on many of our favorite shows, including The Beverly Hillbillies, Gomer Pyle USMC, The Dick Van Dyke show, Zorro...and even appeared with Shemp Howard in a famous THREE STOOGES short!

Also note that her episode OPERATION B-52 is one of the 4 on our "sampler" STEVE CANYON SPECIAL EDITION DVD, which is available for purchase below.

More Steve Canyon on Ebay

Click here to go to Milton Caniff Estate eBay Auction

In an effort to further fund our efforts to restore the Steve Canyon TV series, we are offering this original artwork in an online auction on eBay. This is the original art to the Sunday STEVE CANYON strip, dated April 16, 1961. NOTE that this is the very first Steve Canyon SUnday page original we have ever offered online. This is MILTON CANIFF finished art (pencil and ink), over layouts by Dick Rockwell (Norman Rockwell's nephew) who drew layouts from 1953 on (and lettering by Frank Engli, which he did for Milton from 1934 until 1975). This is a superb sunday strip from early in the story Caniff titled THE RETURN OF THE CRAG HAG (Mar 31st to July 1st, 1961). The art is quite clean for a sunday page and in fact looks MUCH brighter, nicer, sharper AND "more even" in person than it does in this image (It's very hard to scan art of this size, this is merely a snapshot). Size is approximately 25 1/8" X 18 3/4". Dogie Hogan and princess Snowflower are in panels 1-3, Steve is in panels 4-9, MADAME LYNX is in panel 9 (her introduction within this story), and Milton Caniff's distinctive signature in panel one along with the distinctive Canyon logo (designed by Noel Sickles).

A RARE SUNDAY STRIP FROM THE MILTON CANIFF ESTATE.This original has been in Milton's family since it was drawn and it is now finally being offered for sale. This is it, don't be afraid to bid and miss your chance on this amazing offering...perhaps you'll be the lucky owner!

This is a one of a kind item, a very rare, very early and very nice Milton Caniff STEVE CANYON original ... NOTE - We are in process of winding down with the sale of Milton's originals...so don't miss this great opportunity...we won't be selling many more after this. We are close to the end of what we will be offering.

NOTE - The sale of this artwork directly helps the Milton Caniff Estate with projects we are involved in which we believe will interest many fans of his work, so support a good cause and get a guaranteed GREAT piece of early Steve Canyon art that has NEVER been in the hands of another collector!

I want to mention that I have a LOT of pictures, film clips and information to post in the coming weeks which I am sure will be of interest to those of you that frequent our site, so please be patient and drop by often. And a reminder to everyone that our Special Edition DVD and Commemorative Hats make great stocking stuffers, and purchasing them (or even donating a buck or two) helps to support restoring these shows. I will mention that we just finished transferring episodes 19 through 33 and they look and sound TERRIFIC! This is so exciting, and we can't wait to share these on DVD this coming year, the series 50th anniversary...

Oh, and there's BIG NEWS coming on Monday...so stay tuned!

CBGXtra.com/SDCC Interview

Click image to go to CBGXtra Video pageEllis at SDCC2007Maggie Thompson Interviews John Ellis

Catching up on things Dept: On the last day of Comic-Con in San Diego this year, a lovely lass with a video camera showed up at the National Cartoonist's Society booth and (politely) shoved said camera in my face. Well the lady was someone I've always wanted to meet, Maggie Thompson, the Senior Editor of the Comics Buyer's Guide and the person I often refer to as "The mother of comics fandom". There 'tweren't such a thing as a comics fanzine until she and her late husband Don started publishing them ca. 1960! (Titles such as Ballast and Comic Art come to mind). Needless to say, I had a blast talking with Maggie that day, and she has posted an excerpt of the video on their site. Since she caught me off guard, you'll just have to deal with all of the "umm"s and "uhh"s...not to mention MY mistakes...hehehe...

Also note that she has posted a bunch 'o cool interviews with notables such as Ray Harryhausen, Wendy and Richard Pini, and many others, so it's worth taking a look.

And since we're on the subject of San Diego Comic-Con 2007, here is a photo by Adrian Velazquez of the participants in our panel discussion at the con (that I kept forgetting to post).

From Left to right are R.C.Harvey, Russ Maheras, Denis Kitchen, Diana Doalson, Harry Guyton and John Ellis.

R.C.Harvey is the author of "Meanwhile" (Milton's biography that just came out this summer); Russ is the author/artist of the 60th anniversary Steve Canyon strip that just appeared in Air Force Times; Denis published 26 issues of Steve Canyon Magazine in the '80' and early '90s (among other things; Diana is Milton's grand-niece and appeared in the Steve Canyon comic strip in the '60s; Harry Guyton is Milton's nephew, Executor of the Estate, and Executive Producer of the Steve Canyon DVDs; John is me, and I represent the Estate and am Producer of the Steve Canyon DVDs. BIG NEWS is coming...

Steve Canyon on Ebay

(click on image to go to our auction)Oley's Lament
Click here to go to Milton Caniff Estate eBay Auction

In an effort to further fund our efforts to restore the Steve Canyon TV series, we are offering this well known artwork in an online auction on eBay. This is the original art to the daily STEVE CANYON strip, dated March 14, 1952. This is PURE MILTON CANIFF, no assistants worked on this (except for Frank Engli lettering, which he did for Milton from 1934 until 1975). This is a superb daily strip from late in the story Caniff titled CRISIS ON THE CAMPUS (November 15, 1951-April 6th 1952).

The art is pretty clean, no glue stains or the like, and no "paste-overs". The final image from this artwork is perhaps the quintessential illustration that is associated with Milton Caniff. Size is approximately 22 7/8" X 7 1/4". Summer Olson and the Whissel Sisters are in panels one through three, Little Oley Olsen joins them in panels two and three, and then there is the famous powerfully iconic image of Oley crying on the steps with Milton Caniff's distinctive signature in panel four.

THE RAREST OF THE RARE. This last panel has been printed and reprinted the world over as a representation of Caniff's artistry as a storyteller and the greatest adventure comic strip artist of the 20th Century. This image has spoken to the world and it is now finally being offered for sale. This is it, don't be afraid to bid and miss your chance on this amazing offering...perhaps you'll be the lucky owner!
