Canyon...Heroes...Part II

Another brief post and V3 update!

Dean Fredericks poses in front of the Steve Canyon limestone statue in Idaho Springs during their "Steve Canyon Days" celebration July 1959. The statue was erected in July 1950. It's still there today!

As we approach Christmas and the long awaited release of THE COMPLETE STEVE CANYON ON TV VOLUME 3, I am going to briefly reinstate the offer from this past June that a few of you participated in to give a helping hand to the project.

Dean Fredericks  signs autographs for kids and parents alike in Colorado July 1959. Another rare shot from our huge archive from the TV series and creator Milton Caniff!

A few of you have asked and we have listened!

If you think you have what it takes to be a HERO OF THE CANYON click here to read more about how you can participate and gain a little slice of immortality in the bargain.

###

THE COMPLETE STEVE CANYON ON TV VOLUME #3 is still on course , "in the pipe 5 by 5" for release and shipping for delivery to all pre-orderers before Christmas. ALL pre-orders will receive the special 3 volume slipcase with the DVD, which is our thank you gift to all those who have supported us.

Please note that we are about to raise all of our prices soon, sometime between today and Sunday December 2nd (just as soon as I have the time to change ALL of the listings here on our website). The price change reflects several postal rate increases over the last few years and since we offer free shipping unfortunately it is now necessary. Serving our country, Fred Foote (right), Ray Sparkman (left) and Bob Kottke (middle)  of the US Army's First Cavalry Division in early 1944 on the Admiralty Islands, New Guinea, during World War II.

He was promoted to Sergeant and later in 1944 fought in the invasion of Leyte in the Philippines where he was wounded a second time and spent 16 months in hospital recovering from his wounds. Slow But Steady...

First please note that we are still working on the last few fixes and ADDITIONS to Steve Canyon Volume 3 and that if it were possible to go any faster we would. Please be patient for a bit longer. Thanks for all the kind words of faith and encouragement many of you have sent...

Here's a brief bit of news then back to work for me on V3...

Robert Sallin and friend...
After 5 years of conflicting schedules I finally managed to get to record an interview with the very busy Robert Sallin, whose first job in Hollywood was as a troubleshooter on the Steve Canyon TV series! Listed as "Producers Assistant", Bob was involved in many phases of the production. Having produced and directed films for the US Air Force previously (see picture below), he came well prepared for his stint on  Steve Canyon. He was integral to the production, dealing with everything including directing 2nd Unit to obtaining aircraft for the episodes, and his comments are of great interest to us all.

By the way, you may recognize Bob's "friend" above as the Genesis Device from Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan"...Bob went on to produce that movie, and you also may not know that he is the one we should be thanking for it being the arguably the best of the Star Trek movies. Thanks Bob!

Robert Sallin circa 1955 directing a film for the US Air Force overseas.

We also interviewed...

Dean Fredericks (center) with actor Richard Weber and famed WWII fighter ace and Medal of Honor recipient Gregory "Pappy" Boyington (seated) during the filming of THE PHANTOM PLANET (1961).

Actor Richard Weber who appeared in "Phantom Planet" in 1961 with Dean Fredericks, who had a lot of nice things to say about working with Dean! You will be able to hear him on the Dean Fredericks documentary on V3.

Please note that I am fixing the pictures here on our site as I have time...they will ALL be back and viewable soon, most likely after Volume #3 is finished and released...first things first.

By the way, here's what one of the menuslooks like from Volume 3!

AND...be sure and STAY TUNED for the next post, which SHOULD have the news you've all been waiting for!

Ground Zero 55 Years Ago Today!

July 19, 1957 these 5 men stood at the Nevada Test Site, "Ground Zero" while the USAF detonated a 2 kiloton nuclear device there...luckily it was 10,000 feet above them!

CBS news story - click to view!

It was the first (and only) test firing of a nuclear tipped MB-1 air to air rocket launched from an F-89 Scorpion jet fighter.

Atom Central clip (click to view)

There were 5 USAF volunteers there to prove it was safe to do such a thing, to quell any fears the public might have of a nuclear battle in the skies above the US. The five volunteers were:

Colonel Sidney Bruce
Major Norman "Bodie" Bodinger
Major John Hughes
Don Lutrel
and
Lt. Colonel Frank P. Ball

Less than a year later, this same Lt. Col. Frank P. Ball (the officer wearing short sleeves!) would become technical advisor to the Steve Canyon tv show and then a few years later would become Steve Canyon's star Dean Fredericks' son in law.

George Yoshitake, the cameraman, was also there but was not a volunteer.

Be sure to visit ATOM CENTRAL for a nuclear blast from the past (and more info). We want to thank Atom Central's Peter and Jacqueline Kuran for their kindness and generosity in providing aid and assistance to The Steve Canyon Restoration Project. Peter appears in the commentary on the Volume 2 episode OPERATION MUSHROOM, and also has provided NEVER BEFORE SEEN FILM AND SOUND of Col. Ball shot during this nuclear test, which will be seen EXCLUSIVELY on Volume 3 of THE COMPLETE STEVE CANYON ON TV DVD, which is near completion and about to be released! We thank everyone for their ongoing patience, hang in there, it's a comin'!

Update

Please note that Steve Canyon Volume 3 is almost ready to go to the factory. We will be making an announcement with details forthwith.

Also note that we have been having trouble with the images on our website, and also trouble with our main email accounts, due to apple.com closing their idisk/mobileme online file storage service on June 30th. I have been with them for 12 years and using it for this website for the last 6 years, and now it's just gone and over with and causing us no end of trouble. We have been striving to repair the site and that process is underway. Some of you may remember that it took about a month of my time to fix a similar problem when apple changed one little period in their image addresses a year and a half ago...yet another darnfool thing to suck up my time.

We have been experiencing a lot of problems all along with V3 over the last 2 years, but it appears the "gremlins" are on the decline.

I also ask that those of you that have felt inclined to call or write, for whatever reason, just sit tight and be patient. Having to deal with them (good or bad) just slows everything down more than you can imagine and that is something none of us wants.

Please be patient with us a bit longer.

 It's coming.

Thank you for your ongoing support and faith.

The Last Details

A quick word or three wrapping it all up...

As I am wrapping up the last few bits of business this week and checking everything to make sure all elements of the DVDs work as they are supposed to, here is something that may interest some of you that may desire a more personal and lasting connection with the Steve Canyon TV series. Click here for more info. Note this offer expires (and this link will be removed) as of midnight late Tuesday June 5th, 2012. That's in two days,  when our two documentaries will be finalized and permanently "etched in stone" on V3.

Things are moving along briskly and I expect to be turning in Volume 3 to the factory later this week which means we should have the DVDs back from the factory sometime between the middle to the end of June (note it can take two weeks or more to manufacture them by our factory)...HOPEFULLY the middle of the month...then we start shipping! Huzzah! The long and winding wait is nearly over! Keep checking here over the next few weeks for the news you've been waiting to hear!

Thanks to everyone for helping to make this dream a reality!

Memorial Day 2012

In Memoriam

Col. Robert Malcolm Elliot
11/8/1929 - 2/14/1968

Photo of Robert "Wild Bill" Elliot from The Graham AFB Class 55-I Yearbook
Photo restored and courtesy of Dave Rickard

Just over 44 years ago, Captain Robert M. Elliot, was assigned to the 34th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Korat Airbase in southern Thailand. He was due to come home after flying his 100th mission by the end of March 1968. But on the morning of Valentine's Day, February 14, 1968, his wife Billie awoke that morning in Hampton Roads, Virginia with the oddest feeling that her husband, Robert, had come to see her, to tell her he was gone. Her daughter, Julie, was crying, having felt it, too.

Halfway around the world that same day, Capt. Elliot's F-105D Thunderchief was number two in a flight of four. They were to make successive runs on their target near Hanoi. As Elliot was pulling off the target during one of his planned runs, his aircraft was struck by a surface to air missile. He radioed that he was hit, but the rest of the flight did not see any parachute or hear emergency beeper signals indicating that he was able to eject from the aircraft. Elliot was declared Missing in Action, and was posthumously promoted to the rank of Colonel.

His wife and family fought and lobbied hard with the Pentagon for years to find him or his remains and put their fears to rest. Fears that they were wrong and he might be wounded and tortured in a POW camp.

Finally in December 1999, The Pentagon announced that using DNA analysis and dental records, the Army Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii said that remains taken from a Vietnamese grave near the crash site are those of Air Force Colonel Robert M. Elliot.

Colonel Elliot's headstone in the Missing In Action section of Arlington National Cemetery was buried with him in new plot in the cemetery, Section 66, Grave 5652, on April 21, 2000.

Rest in piece Col. Elliot, we honor you in remembrance this day, for giving the ultimate sacrifice for your country.

###

In interviewing Lt. Colonel Russ Rickard, USAF (Ret.), who flew the F-102 Delta Dagger seen in the amazing beginning credits of every Steve Canyon Episode, he told me of another pilot he knew, at the time in 1958 who was also a young lieutenant flying "Deuces" out of George AFB in Victorville California. They had both flown F-102's for the Disney feature THE ABSENT MINDED PROFESSOR (1961) and other Hollywood efforts and had become good friends. Lt. Colonel Rickard went on to describe the spectacular long fast climb up up up from the George AFB runway seen during the end credits of every Steve Canyon episode. He told me that wasn't him flying the Deuce, that was his friend, a helluva pilot, and his name was Colonel Robert "Wild Bill" Elliot.

Here's the end credits from the much anticipated Steve Canyon episode "Operation Intercept" with Col. Elliot's stratospheric climb...and featuring a double-whammy of the repeated opening sequence at the very end featuring the flying skills of Col. Russ Rickard!

MORE on Colonel Elliot and Lt. Colonel Rickard in Volume 3 of THE COMPLETE STEVE CANYON ON TV, which is days away from going to the factory for manufacture. Stay tuned within the next several weeks for some big announcements!!
